Sant Esteve d'Abella

Sant Esteve d'Abella

Description

This Romanesque church already documented in the 11th century dominates the higher part of the village of Abella de la Conca. From here you can also enjoy the views over the Carreu mountains.

This church has three naves with an apse and is decorated on the outside with  Lombard arches.

Inside you can see remains of mural paintings, probably from the 12th and 13th centuries.

History

This church conserved a Gothic retable painted by Pere Serra around 1375. In 1929 it was taken to the International Exhibition and in 1936 to the church at the Santa Maria hospital in Lleida to protect it from destruction. This retable is nowadays at the Museu Diocesà d'Urgell and it shows scenes of the live of the Virgin and different Saints with their attributes.
