It is the most emblematic peak of the Vall Fosca. The possibilities of access by the north face are numerous and unfeasible due to the spectacular south face. An excellent viewpoint of the entire valley and much of the Pyrenees.
DESCRIPTION
We leave the signpost that will be located on the right bank of the Sallente dam, cross it and start going up, following the summer path towards the Pigolo canal. We go up the channel which we can find in very variable snow conditions (from soft to very hard which will force us to wear crampons). At elevation 2100 the valley opens up and we cross the via del carrilet. We continue going up the left side of Coma d’Espòs. At approximately elevation 2450 we turn south crossing the Coma Plana and towards the Tossalet de la Coma (2730 m). Surrounding it to the west, we access in a small descent to the Collada de Coma Plana (2698 m).
The final ascent is made along the wide ridge, where you will need to take off your skis and climb with crampons due to lack of snow or if it is too hard. After about 150 m more straights, the slope softens and the ridge widens allowing an easy arrival to Montsent (2883 m).
We will descend along the NW slope looking for the area with the least slope with a tendency to our left and to the bottom of the valley. After a few turns through the Coma Plana, we must be very careful to turn right towards Les Passades de Montsent (2500 m) and, once in view of the Coma d’Espòs again, turn N without going down a lot of elevation until you find the ascent route again. We will undo it until we reach the Sallente dam again.
SAFETY AND PRACTICAL ADVICE
The entire route runs through Demanding and Simple terrain with hardly any difficulty except at the beginning and at the top. The first point to assess is the state of the Pigolo channel in case plates have recently been placed in the upper part. Between the Collada de Coma Plana and the Passades de Montsent, the Complex terrain requires extreme caution and paying close attention to the route layout. On the descent, circulating carefully, we can easily avoid areas of cliffs and terrain traps.
